Rock-cut chambers on the hillside with stone terraces in front of them

Rock dwellings and chapels

Roman – Byzantine

Church & Monastery

Hundreds of chambers cut into the rock run along both slopes of the valley: shelters, stores, chapels and burial rooms. Some came into use from the 1st century AD onwards and grew into an ordered network of monasteries and places of worship in the Byzantine period. The workability of the soft volcanic rock made this fabric possible. Walking the slopes you can see many of them from outside; take care if you enter, as some are not safe.

Opening hours can change. Entry to the Aya Eleni Church is free; the days and hours it is open differ between sources (Mondays are usually closed). We recommend confirming with the Konya Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism before you set out.
