The cut-stone facade and bell tower of the Aya Eleni Church

Aya Eleni Church

AD 327 · Byzantine

Church & Monastery

One of the oldest churches in Anatolia. According to tradition, Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, stopped in Konya during her pilgrimage to Jerusalem and ordered the church built after seeing the early Christian sanctuaries here. The building is constructed of precisely cut Sille stone; it has three naves and its main dome rests on four elephant-foot piers. Inside are a timber pulpit decorated with plasterwork and a latticed wooden screen, also plaster-decorated, separating the apse from the main space. It is open to visitors today as a monument museum.

Opening hours can change. Entry to the Aya Eleni Church is free; the days and hours it is open differ between sources (Mondays are usually closed). We recommend confirming with the Konya Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism before you set out.
