Ak Monastery (Hagios Chariton)

Church & Monastery

Hagios Chariton, known in Turkish as Deyr-i Eflatun (the Monastery of Plato), lies 4 km west of Konya at the foot of Takkeli Mountain. It is held to have been founded by Saint Chariton in the 4th century. The complex consists of two rock-cut churches, a hagiasma (holy spring), monks' cells, various chambers and a dais. Its inscriptions record repairs in 1067 and 1289 — dates that document the continued presence of a Christian community even under Seljuk rule.

The photograph shows rock-cut chambers in the valley where the monastery stands.

Opening hours can change. Entry to the Aya Eleni Church is free; the days and hours it is open differ between sources (Mondays are usually closed). We recommend confirming with the Konya Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism before you set out.
